SALARY SURVEY OUTCOME AND JOURNAL ARTICLE

Karen Michell (KM) has met with Deloitte and Touche`.
KM has advised that there is no value in doing a survey like this again. Deloitte has suggested that in the future we should look at banding categories with qualifications and types of industry. The survey has shown that there is a lack of planning for medical aid, professional development, retirement etc. KM suggested we contact a company like Old Mutual to put together a package.

ICOH

Problems regarding the organising of ICOH 2009 discussed. A decision had to be made if SASOHN will get involved and to what extent. A decision was made that SASOHN will only get involved with the SCOHN workshop during the ICOH 2009. SASOHN will not get involved with the organising of ICOH 2009. Sonja Kruger will send a letter to Jenny Serfontein informing ICOH Board of SASOHN`s intention. Louwna Pretorius will be attending the ICOH midterm board meeting and SCOHN scientific committee meeting in Humburg, Germany. (11-15th March 2008)

2008 CONFERENCE UPDATE

Presentation done by Bev Botha on the 2008 Sibiya conference.
Registration will be done via the SASOHN National office.
Delegates are to book accommodation directly with the venue.
A suggestion was made that workshops be held on the 05th November 2008 at Sibiya, detailing roles of the Regional PRO, Treasurer and educational rep.

SPIROMETRY
  • Last meeting of NIOH committee was held 23 November 2007. It was agreed at this meeting that SASOHN will be requested to provide a proposal on the registration of audiometrists. K Michell will draw up this proposal and present to SASOHN before presenting to the committee.

  • A meeting has also been held with the department of Labour and it has been requested that the need to be a registered spirometrist be legislated. It is necessary to do this as currently anyone is conducting these tests with a marked poor quality being noted. This could be achieved by making amendments to three of the regulations in the OHS Act. A proposal needs to be presented to DoL for this.

  • SANS 451 has been sent for last comment to the Technical Committee. It should be ready for public comment within the next month.

  • Unit std for spirometry was commented on and we await response to these comments. Two unit stds have been suggested. The first will be for the performance of the test which can be achieved by enrolled nurses etc. The second is a separate std on interpretation. M Felix is in the process of drafting this.

  • ATS/ERS 2005 There have been changes made to the International Standards for spirometry. These were made in 2005 when the ATS and ERS merged their standards- now referred t as ATS/ERS 2005 standard. These changes have been mentioned a couple of times but I repeat them as many practitioners are not implementing them. All tests results must be repeatable to within 150ml for the FVC and the FEV1 and not 200ml anymore. The word repeatable now refers to closeness of test results for intra-test results i.e. at same sitting. The word reproducible now refers to the closeness of test results where conditions change i.e. from one year to the next. These changes have been incorporated into SANS 451.

  • I applied to the ERS for sponsorship to attend a training course and visit testing facilities in an effort to acquire International support for the process we are following in South Africa. I was successful and took back to the books in Nov 2007. it was an amazing experience and much was learnt form the experience. It was also very encouraging to see that the training offered by some providers is more educationally sound than that in other countries. I want to thank SASPOHN for assisting me with costs that were not covered by the sponsorship.
2. AUDIOMETRY

No progress since the AGM report. This portfolio will be managed by a new representative form 2008.

SASOHN Dedicated Page
Regions are also reminded that there is a calendar page. Advertising your workshops on this calendar is free. Please submit dates and contact information for the calendar to the journal in January so you get maximum exposure “mahala”. There is a SASOHN dedicated page an edition. The Mar/Apr page needs to be taken up. May/Jun will include a report form the SASOHN Academic Days. Jul/Aug need a taker. Sept/Oct can be used to advertise the up coming conference and I would suggest that Port Natal take this responsibility. The Nov/Dec can provide feedback form the conference which again falls to the Port Natal ladies.

4. EDUCATION REPORT

4.1. Salary Survey
The quality of the report and the presentation given to SASOHN is less than acceptable. I have made major changes to the survey as it was originally distributed to SASOHN members. The new version will be published. From a research perspective there are many gaps that need to be addressed. A copy of the letter that will be sent to Deloitte is attached to this report.

4.2. ICOH 2009

I requested at the AGM that regions consider working on mini research projects for the conference. The deadline for abstract submission is March. What progress have the regions made? Not aware of any other progress to date. Catering costs etc need to be determined in order to calculate the amount of sponsorship required and how much delegates will need to be charged.
